Varis Takes the All-time Top Scoring Spot
In Shedden’s second season as the head coach (2007-08), the ranking of Jokerit fell a bit. In the playoff quarterfinals, they defeated Pelicans. In the semifinals, they faced Blues who had sent HIFK packing during the quarterfinals.
Jokerit was ahead in the series with wins 3-1, but the Espoo-based team won three in a row and made it to the finals. The most important goal of the series was scored by Ben Eaves for Blues in extra time in the sixth game in Hartwall Arena. Kärpät defended their championship, and Jokerit lost the bronze game to Tappara.
Petri Varis from Jokerit scored three goals in the playoffs and became the Finnish Elite League record holder with 40 playoff goals.
Shedden left to coach EV Zug in Switzerland and took Waltteri Immonen with him. There was another Canadian to coach Jokerit, however, as Glen Hanlon was hired for the job. In the beginning of the 2008-09 season, on the 2nd of October, Jokerit played an exhibition game against the Pittsburgh Penguins. The NHL guests won the match 4-1. Finnish Elite League did not go much better. The fourth place in the regular season did give Jokerit a home advantage, but they were facing Kärpät who had come in ranking ever lower after regular season. Kärpät won again by defeating Jokerit 4 games to 1.
